Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut was received with mixed reviews when it debuted in 1999, and in my opinion, highly underrated. It’s a terrific piece of filmmaking – haunting, intelligent, surreal, and at times even funny. I was pleased to see the following article today, courtesy of Sunset Gun:

Which brings me to the final line of Kubrick’s frequently misunderstood Eyes Wide Shut in which Nicole Kidman states rather flatly, “Fuck” — as in, that’s the answer, that’s what we need to do. A movie I’ve defended since its release, it’s a picture that deserves closer inspection and a worthy finale for the enigmatic auteur.

Read the rest of the great post here. And thank you to Roger Ebert for Twittering the above article.

I don’t often chime in on tech soap operas – we have Valleywag for that (for better or worse). But the latest surrounding Mike Arrington’s pet project is a doozie. For the last couple of years, Arrington had been developing a tablet computing device called the CrunchPad with the help of his partners at Fusion Garage. Set to launch his device late last month, Arrington dropped a bomb on his site that had everyone talking: The End of the CrunchPad:

Our plan was to debut the CrunchPad on stage at the Real-Time Crunchup event on November 20, a little over a week ago…And then the entire project self destructed over nothing more than greed, jealousy and miscommunication.

To make matters worse, Fusion Garage CEO Chandrasekar Rathakrishnan held a private press conference today to tell his side of the story, and perhaps more importantly to announce that the CrunchPad had been renamed JooJoo, and would launch in eight to ten weeks, without Arrington. CNET’s Rafe Needleman was on hand and had a chance to play with the JooJoo:

The hardware is slim and pleasing to hold. The screen is gorgeous, and huge, and the plastic back is gently curved. The unit is very slim, thinner than a MacBook Air. There are no buttons on the device, save the single power switch.

Sure, the device certainly looks great, but I can’t help but feel it still has that “beta” vibe. The performance is sluggish, and unless Fusion Garage can keep the retail price down as Arrington originally conceived, I do not see many rushing out to buy this thing in its current state.

What was once considered one of the “10 Most Brilliant Products of 2009” by Popular Mechanics had suddenly turned into a product nightmare for Mike. With wild speculation over the possibility of an Apple tablet launch next year, many tech pundits believed Arrington wanted to capitalize on the sudden rise in tablet love and launch a product ahead of the Cupertino giant. Whether or not Arrington was riding the coat-tails of an Apple product rumor, however, became irrelevant; many were in fact genuinely excited to see the CrunchPad, an affordable touch device that promised to have the largest capacitive touch screen of its kind. Naturally, Arrington has launched legal action against his former partner, and had this to say on his Twitter account following Chandrasekar’s press conference:

There aren’t any more CrunchPad posts coming from us. It’s all in the lawyers hands now.

Only time will tell whether JooJoo will make its launch date amidst this escalating fiasco.

With the 2009-2010 NHL season just around the corner, I thought I’d post a tip for all of you Calgary Flames fans out there who wish to listen to the Fan960 on their iPhones or iPod Touch.

Download and install FStream from the iTunes Application store on to your touch screen device of choice (iPhone/iPod Touch) – http://itunes.com/app/FStream

Once the app is installed, launch FStream and add the following address to your FStream “Favorites” – mms://a543.l8090152405.c80901.n.lm.akamaistream.net/D/543/80901/v0001/reflector:52405

You do not need to fill in the “Format” or “Bitrate” fields as they are populated automatically. That’s it! Now you can enjoy listening to Peter Maher blurt out “Yah Baby!” for just about every play.

In case you missed Newsweek’s brilliant “Why Health Advice on ‘Oprah’ Could Make You Sick” article last month, here’s an excerpt:

In 2007, Oprah invited Jenny McCarthy, the Playboy model and actress, to describe her struggle to find help for her young son. When he was 2½, Evan suffered a series of seizures. A neurologist told McCarthy he was autistic. “So what do you think triggered the autism?” Oprah asked McCarthy. “I know you have a theory.”

McCarthy is certain that her son contracted autism from the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination he received as a baby. She told Oprah that the morning he went in for his checkup, her instincts told her not to allow the doctor to give him the vaccine. “I said to the doctor, I have a very bad feeling about this shot. This is the autism shot, isn’t it? And he said no, that is ridiculous; it is a mother’s desperate attempt to blame something on autism. And he swore at me.” The nurse gave Evan the shot. “And not soon thereafter,” McCarthy said, “boom, soul gone from his eyes.”

Read the rest of the article here. Good for Newsweek to call out Oprah on these issues. Next to the Glenn Beck program on Fox News, this is the epitome of ignorant brainwashing. What the heck happened to Oprah?

The lack of WiFi or ethernet port doesn’t bother me as I’ll eventually hook up a Drobo or NAS drive to it via USB. This device has played absolutely everything I’ve thrown at it, including 1080p MKV videos. There is currently no cover art support for MKV or AVI files, but I’ve been told that Western Digital is working on that on an upcoming firmware update.

Browsing photos, music, and video files is a breeze and quite snappy. Subtitle support works right out of the box. The interface is reminiscent of the Playstation 3 and is very easy to navigate with the included remote control (comes with batteries!).

I was previously using my PC with TVersity software to stream content to my XBOX 360 over WiFi. Large HD files would choke and stutter, and having to leave my PC on while watching movies was costly. So all in all this was a great purchase ($149.99) and should pay for itself in no time. Highly recommended.
